I'm not an expert at political geography, but this should help you a
little:
1. Mercer County was created in April 1846 from, at least, Burlington
and Somerset Counties - I think there was a piece of Monmouth too, but
someone more knowledgeable could tell you if that is correct. At any
rate, Mercer at that time was comprised of the townships of Nottingham
(now Hamilton), Princeton, East Windsor, West Windsor, Hopewell,
Lawrence (formerly Maidenhead), Ewing, and Trenton.
2. I don't believe that Hopewell was ever a county, just a township.
3. When the area which became Trenton was originally settled it was in
Burlington County.
