Smalley Family History
The best source for the Smalley Family History is a book at the
Alexander Library, Rutgers University, New Brunswick NJ.
I used it to check out some Runyon/Smalley connections which
occured primarily around Piscataway NJ. If I recall correctly,
this line moved to NJ from Mass (Plymouth?) and descended from
a John Smalley.
Now for the Hunterdon Co connection. In ~1742, there was a
John and Susannah Smalley who moved to Kingwood, Hunterdon Co
to some property that Susannah's father (John Bray) had given
her. They had the following children. However, it appears that
Susannah moved back to Middletown NJ (Monmouth Co)-- it appears
that it was to her folks place but left four children with John.
(Note in 7 May 1760 newspaper in Hunterdon Co). However, since
all the children were mentioned in their Grandfather John Bray's
will, there must have been some on-going contact. Perhaps one of
these Smalley's were related to your David Smalley. Of course,
there were a bunch of Smalley's in Piscataway area and Hunterdon
Co seemed to be a very popular place to migrate during this era.
If that is the case, David would be related, but not a descendant
to the above John Smalley.
