Subject: Castle Garden/Ellis Island

Its my understanding that Castle Garden, which was on the very southern
end of Manhattan Island, preceded Ellis Island as the clearinghouse for
immigrants. I believe that once Ellis Island was up and functioning,
Castle Garden was shut down. I've never heard of any different entry
points for those who were or were not sponsored, but I'm sure if that's
true someone will jump in here.
