Bob,
A ______ Barclay married Margaret Kerr before 9 Jan 1711 in East New
Jersey. They had six children:
Margaret (9 Jan 1711 - 7 Jul 1785)
Elizabeth (10 Jun 1716-)
Catherine (14 Apr 1718-)
Robert (3 Mar 1723 - 18 May 1788)
Samuel (23 Mar 1726-)
Walter (14 Feb 1729)
Most of these children moved to Rowan Co, North Carolina, but Margaret
Kerr Barclay remained in New Jersey and married James Brown--they had 6
children.
A Robert Barclay married Leah _____. His will is dated 12-5-1786 and
probated in 1788 (Will Book C, page 121, Rowan Co, N.C--mentions Leah,
and children: Samuel, David, John, Robert, William, Walter, Margaret,
Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary, and Rachel. Catherine married a Hendrickson,
and Margaret and Mary married Todd brothers. Leah is on the 1800 census.
I have an unsubstantiated note that these Todd brothers were sons of
General Todd of Pennsylvania and relatives of Mary Todd who married
Abraham Lincoln against her family's wishes.
Deed Book 4, page 617, Rowan Co, N.C. shows on 4-4-1761, and proved in
court in 1762, Robert Barclay was granted 708 acres by the Earl of
Granville, the only proprietor of North Carolina who ad not ceded his
rights back to the King. To receive more than 200 acres a man had to be
of importance and "good" birth. By 1778 Robert Barclay was paying taxes
on 894 acres, doing jury duty, acting as surveyor, and overseeing road
construction. he apparently had land grants in Kentucky--these went ot
his sons Walter and Robert.
According to Carolyn L. Barkley, Genealogist, Barclay One-Name Study,
2509 Placid Place, Virginia Bach, VA 23456-3743 (),
there is a very good chance that the above Robert Barclay is the son of
Margaret Kerr and poossibly related to the Barclays of Urie, but this is
not proven yet. There are a number of reserachers working on this,
however.
Other possibilities for this Robert are two:
1) Robert Barclay (b 19 Mar 1717/18), son of John Barclay(b 20 Oct 1687
in Urie, Scotland) and Ann Strettel. This John is the son of Robert
Barclay of Urie(1648-1690), the Quaker Apologist(wife, Christian
Mollison), son of Col David Barclay of Urie and Catherine Gordon.
2) Robert Barclay (b 1737), son of John Barclay (1702, Perth Amboy,NJ)
and Katherine Gordon. He was the son of John Barclay(1659(Urie)-abt
1731). He was the son of Col David Barclay and Catherine Gordon.
I am sorry this is not more definitive, but maybe more info will come to
light soon.
