Here's a summary of the responses, plus some research, anyone care to
dispute or update the data?

Esq. is an abbreviation of the word "esquire", a title of respect that is
no longer in use today. In the 1800s, it was used as a title of courtesy
usually in abbreviated form after a man's full name, especially if the
person was an attorney. According to the Oxford dictionary it is "the
title appended to name of one regarded as gentleman by birth, position, or
education, especially in address of letter." However, anyone could use the
abbreviation, Esq. after their name, it does not necessarily mean they are
in fact an attorney.
