Jim, The State Archives in Trenton has municipal tax ratables for the period
1773 - 1822. Each book covers a specific township or municipal ward for a
specific year and list all landowners, household heads and single adult males,
enumerating their taxable assets. i.e.,land, livestock, mills, slaves,
carriages, etc.
There is no complete and comprehensive name index to this collection. two
recent publications function as partial indexes to this collection,
Stryker, Rodda, Kenn, Revolutionary Census of N.J. Indexes tax ratables for
1773-74. 1778-80 and 1784-86.
Jackson, Ronald Vern, N.J.Tax List, 1772-1822, Salt Lake City; Accelerated
Indexing Systems, 1981. Although self-described as a comprehensive
alphabetical index to the tax ratbles, it is incomplete. No references are
given for Hunterdon Co. or for scattered townships elsewhere in N.J.
This series can serve as a substitute for the missing N.J. census of 1790,
1800, 1810, or 1820, providing a " heads of households " list. They do not
indicate family size or the names of other people living there.
Hope this is of help. Walt
