The following is taken from O'Callaghan's "History of New Netherland; or
NewYork under the Dutch", Volume 2, page 529:
Those citizens of New Amsterdam who, on September 5, 1664, signed a petition
to Gov. Stuyvesant asking him to surrender to the British fleet of 6 frigates
(with 600 soldiers aboard) to avoid "the absolute ruin and destruction of
about fifteen hundred innocent souls, only two hundred and fifty of whom are
capable of bearing arms."
