Dear list members:

I learned that my gggranfather, Jacob R. Compton of Hopewell served in the
Revolution.

(1) How do I learn something about his service? My notes say he was in
"Quick's Company" and also that he was "PVT 2 BN Somerset"

(2) In 1794, he and some Hunterdon friends led a wagon train from Hopewell
to Colerain Township in the Cincinnati area. Did Revolutionary War vets
have some special access to homsestead land in the NW? Colerain records
show that he acquaired his farm land on May 15, 1796 in a deed from William
and Hannah Tindell of Tranton NJ.

(3) A third question relates to the "NJ John Hyde Association" formed in
Colerain by Jacob and his wife, Orriminah Hyde and other interested
parties. Orriminah was John Hyde's daughter, and the Association was
apparently formed to try to recover the money John Hyde had invested in
England before the war. I imagine there were many such actions taken by
American groups to recover money immoblized in England by the Revolution.
Is there any literature on the John Hyde case or other actions of this class?

Would be grateful for any info or advice on these questions.

Boyd Compton, NYC
