Boyd,
Fords 1881 History of Hamilton County Ohio pg. 367:
"Jacob R. Compton was born in New Jersey, in 1760/ In 1796 he made his first
settlement in Columbia township, having emigrated into Ohio from Kentucky.
His business was that of a cooper, at one time, and afterward that of a
farmer. He died in 1821 at his home in Columbia township/ Ermmina Compton,
his wife, was born in 1760 and died in 1840. Abraham, who was born in 1796
in the state of kentucky, came with his parents to Hamilton county, with he
ramained till the year 1812, when, a lad of eighteen, he enlisted int he
army. Unhurt, he returnedto his home, crowned with all the honor our gallant
sons justly received. He was married at the age of twenty, to Abigail
Phillips, by whom he had thirteen children-five sons and eight daughterss.
Oliver died from disease in the war of 1861; Freeman, alfred, John A.
(killed in the Mexican war), Spencer (now disceased), Catherine, Emma (also
disceased), Sarah, Elvira and Hetty (both disceased), Hannah, and one dying
in infancy unnamed. Mr. Compton is a gentleman remarkable for his memory.
His business has been that of a farmer and carpenter, which he has
industiously pursued for almost thre-quarters of a century. he and his wife
are and have been active members of the Baptist church for many years."
This bio was in a section about Springfield Twp. which was/is a neighbor of
Colerain Twp. The bio, if you notice states Columbia Twp., which is one of
the orig. Twp's, but on the opposite side from Colerain. However, there is a
Compton Rd. that runs off of Colerain Ave, in Colerain Twp. and I would
imagine it runs into/thru present day Springfield Twp.
I don't believe we had homesteaders here. This was part of what was called
'Symmes Purchase' and it included all of the "land between the Miami's"
purchased by John Cleves Symmes of NJ, and I think originially extended up
to/through presant day Dayton Oh.On the eastern side of Cinti, across the
Miami, lies Anderson Twp. which was a part of the Virginia Military Dist.
This doesn't answer your question, but hope it helps anyway.
