Subject: Fwd: [NJHUNTER] German church in Alexandria TWP

Sandy,
This church is very much alive with a new roof and new addition within the
last year. It is the Alexandria Presbyterian Church, formerly the
Presbyterian Church of Mount Pleasant, on Route 519 across from the
Alexandria Cemetery. The church is actually in Holland Twp but the cemetery
is in Alexandria. The early church records were microfilmed by the LDS and
are available for loan at your nearest family history center. If you look
in Snell, pp. 426-27 for Holland Township you will see its history,
starting before 1760 as the "Dutch and English Presbyterian Church and
Congregation of Alexandria." It served two congregations under one roof,
German speaking and English speaking. In 1802 the German congregation
through their pastor, requested that they be transferred from the German
Reformed Synod in Philadelphia to the care of the Presbytery of New
Brunswick, and the two branches were united into one congregation. Many of
the German parishioners are buried across the street in the cemetery. Some
of the German parishioners, with surnames like Eckel and Ulmer, became
Presbyterian trustees and elders in the church.
