Arline,
THANKS Arline for your help on my GGGG Grandfather JEREMIAH
FRENCH, private in the Hunterdon Co. NJ Militia during the
Revolutionary War (RW)!
JEREMIAH FRENCH was supposedly born at Amwell in Hunterdon Co. in
1762. The principal question (among many others) is how Jeremiah came
to enlist in the Hunterdon Co. NJ Militia when, so far, I can find no
record of his parents (whoever they are) there. I'm wondering if any
one on this list has ANY information on any other FRENCHs who could
have been part of Jeremiah's family. It would seem that, if he was
born at Amwell, in Hunterdon Co., and enlisted in the militia there,
that he must have spent his youth with his family somewhere in
Hunterdon Co., and then moved on to other places after the conclusion
of the RW.
. At some point after the RW, he moved to Scipio on the
Indiana/Ohio border, where he died in 1834 and was later reinterred in
1868 in Cincinnati OH (I visited the graves of Jeremiah and children
in Cincinnati in 1998; there is no RW War marker). Jeremiah married a
HANNAH WILLIAMS around 1788; she was born at Goshen in Orange Co., NY.
and Jeremiah is believed to have lived at/near Goshen for some period,
but may have married Hannah Williams at Bedford Co., Pennsylvania or
possibly Peoria, Ohio. Jeremiah French and Hannah parented 8 children,
all believed to have been born in Ohio.
Also, what actions, if any, during the RW War was the Hunterdon
Co. NJ Militia involved in?
Best regards from beautiful Alaska,
BOB LYNN
