Hi! It's been awhile, so I thought I'd put the following somewhat modified
version of an earlier posting on the board again -
Looking for early information on John CAVANAUGH (a/k/a CAVANAGH) and
antecedents.
John was born in 1781, apparently the son of John Cavanagh and Elisabeth
Horn (m.
in Hunterdon County in 1779). The younger John owned a farm and mill near
Prallsville in Amwell Township, Hunterdon County,
NJ in the early 19th century. After twice becoming a
widower, he married Caroline (or Rebecca Caroline) SCHOMP (b. 1801) about
1820.
At one point he was Sheriff of Hunterdon County. He apparently was
involved in a
number of business ventures, at least one of which apparently involved
connections
in Orange County, NY. After some seeming financial reverses, John and his wife
moved to Philadelphia about 1830, where he ran a flour and feed business.
He died
in 1850.
Children included Elizabeth (b. 1821 in NJ), Hannah (b. 1824, probably in
NJ),
Rebecca (b. 1830, probably in PA), Charles (1841-1854), Ezra and John, Jr.
