List,
I have received an e-mail from a person who visited
Lambertville, N.J. during one of her ancestor searches. During one of
her visits to a Lambertville cemetery she noticed a number of RICE
family tombstones.
I would like to know if RICE was/is a frequent surname in the
Lambertville, N.J. area. Was there a RICE as an early settler in the
area? The reason I ask is that my original American ancestor was Edward
Rice who emigrated to the American Colonies from N. Ireland, Dungannon,
County Tryone.
Edward settled in Buckingham, Bucks Co., Pa. (across the
Delaware River from Lambertville, N.J.) and arrived with a
Certificate of Good Character signed by his rector, dated June 1736.
This Edward of Bucks married Elizabeth Wilson, also of Ireland,
I believe sometime around 1740-42. After nine children, Edward died.
Elizabeth Rice then remarried, to a Mathew Beans. With Mathew, they had
two children.
Family lore mentions that Edward arrived in the American
colonies with two other brothers but we are not able to find reference
to them anywhere. I am looking for them. So, I would like to know if
there is mention of a Rice in the histories of Lambertville area as an
early settler. Any and all information is appreciated.
Thanks for your attention.
Bob Rice from Lancaster Co., Pa.
