For those who responded about the question about Six Mile Run - I also wrote
to the inquirer about a source for Wyckoff research and suggested he stop
spinning his wheels and reinventing the research already done. Here it is.
The Wyckoff Association in America, THE WYCKOFF FAMILY IN AMERICA: A
Genealogy, Rutland, VT: The Tuttle Publishing Company,Inc., 1950.
The book is out of print, but I found my copy at one of the antique book
sellers on the east coast about 1983. It cost me $150, so you can see it was
not cheap. The book probably only cost $50 in 1950, if that, but because it
is now rather scarce, it may be harder to find.
In addition, there is a Wyckoff Association that has the Wyckoff House as a
museum. They have "chapters" all over the United States. There is one here
in California where I reside and every year they have a family gathering and
produce newsletters periodically. I have yet to participate because I am a
back door Wyckoff rather than a direct Wyckoff descendant plus they usually
hold the picnic at a time when I have other things planned. One of these
days I will get to the picnic.
Anyway, back to the book. I have checked out the information in the book by
doing original research to verify the information on the two families that I
have connections with and found that the information was accurate. All I did
was fill in the missing information which wasn't provided and penciled it
into the book myself. The information stated was correct.
I did advise the person not to reinvent the wheel because I felt the book was
accurate--which is not the best advise. But in this particular case, there
are enough sources out there--such as the Association itself that I felt it
was unnecessary for him to follow up except if he wanted the actual records
for his own personal line to prove it.
Typically, I always advise people to recheck the information found in written
sources as sometimes it is incorrect, particularly when the information in
the books is not followed with source citations. When that is the
case--ALWAYS, ALWAYS, recheck the information yourself.
