Hello Listers!
Thank you all for the terrific information and suggestions you supplied! My clues have all come together, with your help!, and they all point to Jonathan 4 HIGGINS (Jediah 3, Jediah 3, Richard 1) as a possible father for JOHN HIGGINS.
The mysterious, and ever present, PAUL COOL (KUHL) married Hannah HIGGINS, dau of Judiah 5 (Jonathan 4).
Nahaniel 5 HIGGINS (Jonathan 4) and Martha PERRINE's dau. Mary HIGGINS married Samuel HILL. Their grand-daughter, Hannah Eusebia Drake (dau of Charles DRAKE and Hannah HILL) was married to John M. DALRYMPLE, the man who remembered visiting Mahlon Clark HIGGINS and thought he was a "cousin".
Mahlon Clark 7 HIGGINS line is Jesse 6, Judiah 5, Jonathan 4.
Nathaniel 5 HIGGINS (Jonathan 4) was definitely the Nathaniel who was living either with or next to our John HIGGINS ca 1790. Nathaniel 5 was appointed the guardian of his brother, Judiah 5's, 4 minor children, Martha M., Samuel M., Mary, and Rebecca (by Judiah 5's second wife Rachel McPHERSON) 25 March 1820. Sureties: Jonathan and John Higgins.
Jonathan and John could be Judiah 5's older sons by first wife Mary HILL.
Is there a possibility the sureties were Nathaniel 5's brother Jonathan 5 and perhaps another brother John?
Stumbling block is that Jonathan 4 HIGGINS abstract of will names 3 sons, Nathaniel, Judiah, and Jonathan, and dau. "Peggy" COVENHOUVEN. No mention of son John. It is my understanding that they won't even open the books containing the original wills anymore because of the fragility of the documents.I live in MI, so little hope that they'd mail me a copy of the original! I'm wondering if it is possible that John (if he is Jonathan 4's son) rec'd an early inheritance. Wouldn't that be mentioned in the abstract?
Are there any Jonathan 4 HIGGINS researchers out there who might have a copy of the original will? And could someone please verify that his date of death was 3 Jan 1815? (He lived to be 90?)
Any thoughts and suggestions on how to proceed will be greatly appreciated!
Thank You All!
Alison
