The Improved Order of Red Men was founded in 1833 on the principles of Freedom, Friendship and Charity. There is reason to think that the roots of the organization went back in history to
before the Revolution. They tried to preserve Native American Indian customs in a civic organization. In the late 50s there were still more than 400,000 members. Local branches were called
"tribes".
