Is anyone working on the BUTLER family of Hunterdon County?
I've traced my impossible SMITH family back to a possible BUTLER
connection:
Nathan D. SMITH's death certificate (1914, b. 1835) names his father as:
Joseph P. SMITH
and the marriage licence for his second marriage (1891) names his father
as Joseph P. SMITH and his mother as Susan.
Ancestry.com has NJ Marriage abstracts which show this:
Joseph SMITH Sex: M Marriage(s): Spouse: Susan BUTLER Marriage:
20 Sep 1823
Hunterdon, New Jersey 2-242 (Runyan, J.P.)
They could be Nathan's parents as it certainly fits into all the known
facts. There is, in addition, a Hunterdon Co. marriage record for*
Nathan BUTLER m Charity BELLIS
07 Apr 1803 1-73 Rockerfellor, J. P.
which again would fit, making them Susan BUTLER's parents. And, would
explain the naming of her son Nathan SMITH (Nathan was not a family name
in the Smith family as far as can be determined.)
*There seems to be major disagreement for the husband of Charity BELLIS
where the name is given two additional ways beside Nathan Butler all for
the same 7 April 1803 date.
Is anyone else working on this BUTLER family?
Thanks,
Marilyn
