I am searching for information on Elizabeth (-) MARTS SNOOK and Hannah
(COOLBACK) SNOOK.
Elizabeth (-) was first the wife of John MARTS of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., who
made a will 15 Jan 1777. The contents were: Wife, ELIZABETH MARTS, one
equal share with my son WILLIAM, of my estate. Daughter, LYDIA, 5 pounds.
Daughter, HANNAH, 10 pounds. Son, William, 50 pounds, when of age. Lands to
be sold. Daughter, ABIGAIL, 5 pounds, when of age. Executors: wife
Elizabeth, and my friend Peter ENT. Witnesses: Jacob SNYDER, John CORWINE,
William HILSEE. Proved Feb. 25, 1777. Inventory was taken by Jacob SNYDER
and Judiah HIXSON on 20 Feb 1777. (NJ Lib. 19, p. 80)
John SNOOK (son of William of Hunterdon Co.) was first married to Else
ROCKEFELLER, dau. of Johann Peter ROCKEFELLER. Else died before her father
made his 1763 will naming her "SNUKE" children William, Ann, Peter and John.
On 14 Dec 1779, Elisabeth MARTS and John SNOOK of Hunterdon Co. took out a
marriage license and were married (where?).
The son of John SNOOK and Else ROCKEFELLER, John SNOOK, Jr., married on 20
Jul 1781, in Hunterdon Co., Hannah COOLBACK. They migrated to Warren Co.,
OH, by/bef. 1803.
Interesting information but what does it mean...
The surname COOLBAUGH, as it generally came to be, is rare in early Hunterdon
Co. records and was spelled many ways including Coolbogh, Coolbagh Coolbauh,
Coolboch, and Coelbagh.
On 15 Mar 1779, Hannah COOLBOCH and Elisabeth MARCH posted bond on the estate
of William COOLBOCH of Amwell, Hunterdon Co., and Hannah was made
administrator.
Who is this William COOLBOCH? This record, according to Edward C. Hoagland
in his COOLBAUGH genealogies, refers to William COOLBAUGH whose wife was
Sarah JOHNSON. Hoagland says they had children: Moses, Peter, William,
John, Cornelius, Rachel, Benjamin, Sarah, Nancy and HANNAH. According to
Hoagland, Hannah married (-) TANNER and Silas BARTON.
However, at the time the estate of William COOLBOCH was being administered,
the William COOLBAUGH of Hoagland's histories had at least one son available
to be administrator, and the others lived in PA, but not so far away that
they could not be present if called upon. It seems unusual that a daughter
would be allowed to administer an estate if a son or other male (friend,
neighbor, etc.) could do so. Was Hoagland incorrect and this was not the
record for the William Coolbaugh of his histories?
Was Hannah COOLBOCH, administrator, the wife of William who died by 1779?
Was Elisabeth MARCH actually Elisabeth MARTS and perhaps a daughter? Could
Hannah COOLBOCH also be a daughter?
Thank you for any insights into these puzzles. Judy Tooman
