Hi Mike,
I tie the Smiths you speak of to my Sinclair line and have some
information, though unfortunately, not parents of Harbert.
History of Hunterdon Co., by Snell, pg 416, lists Herbert Smith as one of
the tenants of the Hamilton tract in 1774. I have copies of several maps
that show the land of Harbert Smith and there are no other SMITH's in that
area that I can discern. The family bible, which I have the honor of
owning, was given to their first dtr Charity which lists the birth, death
and marriage dates for Herbert and Ann, among other family data. Ann was
born in Pa. The bible was a wedding present to Herbert/Ann.
Harbert Smith (as found in several documents)
b 18 Feb 1766
d 3 Jan 1847
md 17 Jan 1793
wife Ann Huff
b 10 June 1777
d 18 Feb 1860
5 Children:
1. Charreta (Charity) Smith, b 18 Jan 1794 in Hunterdon Co., NJ, d 24 Nov
1878 in Greenwich Twp, bd Greenwich Presb. Church, NJ md 19 Sept 1811 by
Nixon in Hunterdon Co to John Sinclair b 1 Jan 1788, d 12 Jan 1867 by
Greenwich PResb. Church, Greenwich, NJ (son of John Sinclair and Ann
Albach/Alpaugh) They had 13 children: William Smith Sinclair b 4 May 1812,
Herbert A. Sinclair b 2 Mar 1814, James b 16 Mar 1818, John B., Ann Maria b
12 Dec 1820, Margaret b 2 Feb 1822, Elizabeth b 15 Aug 1823, Eli b 1 Jan
1825, Meranda b 16 May 1826, Andrew b 28 Jan 1828, George W. b 12 Nov 1830,
Lucinda b 24 Feb 1831, Caroline b 19 Aug 1833
2. Charles Smith b 11 May 1796, d 21 Dec 1844 md 17 Jun 1820 to Ann. They
had atleast one dtr Margaret Smith b 22 June 1821
3. William H. Smith b 28 Aug 1800 d 19 Apr 1855 bd Finesville, NJ, md 26
June 1824 to Maria S. Mershan. He was also md to Charity Zearfoss after
Maria's death. Maria and William had one dtr Baty Hughes Smith b 26 Mar
1825, died Jul 1825. I don't have any children with Charity, but he was
married at the age of 51. Charity Zearfoss was born abt 1809. Her age at
marriage on 17 Nov 1851 was listed as 42. She was a widow at the time of
her marriage. William apparently had yet another wife Sarah G. Smith b 30
June 1799, died 17 Apr 1851. She is bd next to William in Finesville, NJ.
Along side them is bd I. H. Smith who served in the 31 Regiment, Co. H for
Hunterdon Co., during the Civil War. At this time, I have been unable to
get the military records for him. There are no dates on the headstone for
I. H. Smith.
4. Katherine Smith b 12 Aug 1803 - no other info
5. Elizabeth Smith b 30 Aug 1806 md Reuben Kelsey They had atleast one
dtr Mary Ann Kelsey b 18 Jul 1825
If you have info on any of these SMITH children that could help fill out
the dates, I'd appreciate the help. If you'd like copies of the bible
records, please feel free to ask.
Sincerely, Lorretta Sinclair
