Don't know what they did in sunny and warm Florida for aliases, but there was
a defiinite court procedure up north for name-changes, even in the 18th
century I found a fascinating book at NEHGS, quite a thick one, listing
everyone who had applied to Massachusetts courts for name changes,and their
reasons for it. The cases dated from the early 18th century. There is
doubtless a similar record for those seeking name changes in other states of
colonial America.
