Hunterdon County Naturalization records have been published in various
sources, including the Records of Old Hunterdon County, vols I and II, and
More Records of Old Hunterdon County, Vol. I, compiled by Phyllis D'Autrechy
and editied by Roxanne Carkhuff. Only immigrants from non-English speaking
countries were considered aliens prior to the Revolution. Citizenship was
required to purchase land, and to vote (if you were not female). The latest
publication by Phyllis D'Autrechy contains records of naturalizations from
1803 to 1876 in Hunterdon County. There are no Housells listed, and no
women, thus no Mary Moore. Volume II of More Records of Old Hunterdon
County is about to be published early in 2001. Perhaps there will be more
naturalizations.
