Reseaching BEST, BODINE
I hope someone out there knows something about the given name JAIN. My ancestors Michael and Anna BEST named their first child Jain. Michael was a schoolteacher so was not illiterate. His son, JAMES BEST, purchased a Bible in 1834 and proceeded to write down the family information. By that time he was 45 years old. He wrote the name of his sibling: JAIN BEST [His capital "J" and captal "T" look a lot alike so it could have been TAIN. No sex is given for the child. AT THE SAME TIME he wrote down the name of one of his children: JANE BEST. This is past the time when spelling didn't matter. He knew how to spell Jane. Is JAIN merely a variation of JANE, like Mary and Marie or Jon and John? Is this child probably female? Anyone out there know?
Joan Best
