John Paradise, portrait painter, was born in the little village of
Pennington, in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, on October the 24th, 1783. He
married Elizabeth STOUT. His ancestors were English, his grandfather having
emigrated to Maryland. His father, John Paradise, Sr. was a saddler and
had his shop within the village.

John Paradise and his wife Elizabeth STOUT had a son John Wesley Paradise,
born in 1809, in New Jersey, probably Pennington. This son became an
engraver of portraits and bank notes and was one of the founders of the
"National Academy of Fine Arts of New York", in 1826. His death occured in
1862 in New York.

John Paradise, portrait painter, died near Springfield, New Jersey on
November 26th 1833, at the home of his sister, who was the wife of Philemon
Dickinson.

John Paradise painted the portraits of the Rev. Joseph Rue and his wife, in
Pennington.

The Rev. Joseph Rue was born June 19th, 1751 at Freehold, N. J. He died
April 15, 1826, in Pennington, N.J.
This portrait is identified by the following words, on the back of
canvas:--

Rev. Joseph Rue. Et. 53 done in June 1807. by Jno. Paradise.

Elizabeth Liscombe Rue, wife of Rev. Joseph Rue was born September 5, 1760,
in New York City. She died August 25, 1845, in Pennington, N.J.
Her portrait is identified by the following words, on the back of canvas:--

Mrs. Eliza Rue. Et. 45 done in June 1807. by Jno Paradise.

Mrs. Rue's mother was Elizabeth Adams. She married Thomas Liscomb, July 17,
1759.
