Travel on the Erie Canal like the Morris Canal in New Jersey was by
canalboat. The National Canal Museum has a website at
http://www.canals.org/.

The canals were very popular transportation for cargo and also passengers
until the railroads started to replace them after the Civil War. Their
heyday was pretty much over by the 1880s although they were still used into
the 1900s. My 2nd great grandfather left the Morris Canal for Michigan in
1880.
