The following article appeared today in the Princeton
Packet:

The Van Harlingen Historical Society of Montgomery
will be featuring guest speaker Dr. First Haring
Fabend and her lecture "In the Good Old Summertime" on
Sunday at 2pm at the Blawenburg Reformed Church on
Route 518 at the Great Road intersection.

Dr. Haring's lecture will discuss what rural life
offered young people by way of sports, outings,
picnics, dancing and dating in the 19th century. She
will combine this topic with an account of "The
Harlingen Reformed Church, Harbinger of the Religious
Revival in the Raritan Valley."

As part of her research, Dr. Haring read numerous 19th
century diaries and collected papers of familiar Dutch
names of the Raritan Valley. Her research covers,
among other topics, the role of the minister's wife,
the evangelical way of death, the rise of the Sunday
School Movement and the Romantic Cemetery Movement.

Dr. Haring is known for her prize-winning book, "A
Dutch Family in the Middle Colonies, 1600-1800", for
which she received the 1989 book award of the New York
State Historical Association and the 1989 Hendricks
award of the New Netherland Project. Dr. Fabend has
published five novels as well.

Harlingen Church, their pictures are on my website.
Blawenburg Church is worth a visit just for its
interior, which has box pews and beautiful old
lighting.]
