Note to all:
Not only was it a German custom of using the middle name instead of the
baptismal name as the familiar name; my Hopkins (English descent) line did
the same in at least one family. Children (male and female) born from 1835
to 1844. I suspect the practice was not by descent but by period or area of
birth.
