HI,

I have a copy of the Militia and exempts if anyone would like me to look up a
name for them.

Moses Pettit did serve with the Hunterdon Militia, Kingswood Twp.

This is from Vol. IX, No.2 Jan-Apr, 1934 Whole No 35-36 Compiled and
contributed by Hiram Deats.

To make it short: Chapter 413, approved Nov 30, 1792, provided for the means
for reorganization of the existing Militia and outlined the method of
increasing the force. It appointed a Commissioner in each County to carry
out its provisions and power to choose a deputy for each Township. It
charged the officers with the enrollment of "every free and able-bodied white
male citizen between the ages of eighteen and forty-five" within their
respective jurisdictions. All citizens enrolled were considered "as and of
the Militia of this state" and were to be formed into companies unless they
claimed exemption. Exemption was by reason of physical disability or because
of certain specified occupation or official positions. Under a literal
reading of the law others could claim exemption by the payment of a special
tax of $3.00 a year. He states that a list of the militia and the exempts
would constitute a complete census of the free white male citizens between
the ages specified.
