Hi Ginny , Rich and Others:
As another direct descendant of James Stout SUTPHIN and his wife Charity
HORTMAN here is what my records reflect. Charity HORTMAN b. 28 Dec 1777
d. 9 Feb 1852 (the last digit on her headstone is NOT inscribed) at the
Pleasant Ridge Cemetery near Raeville. The birth date was received via
internet from another researcher WITHOUT DOCUMENTATION. Charity's
parents were John HORTMAN and Mary FISHER a daughter of Christopher
FISHER and Mary YOUNG.
A story to encourage people to be persistant in their research. About 3
years ago I was at the NJ Archives and was looking for proof of
Revolutionary War Service for Christopher FISHER (son of Peter "The
German"). I filled out a "request form" and was told there was no
record. I had seen a reference in Lequear's "Traditions of Hunterdon"
to Christopher FISHER having acted as a Lieutenant VERY EARLY in the War
i.e. approx April 1776. Also I have a xeroxed copy of the inventory of
Christopher FISHER the son of Christopher and in the inventory he had a
"sword, pistol and belt". Since Christopher II died at about age 25 I
wondered how he came by these items and "surmised" they may have come
from his father IF his father had served as an officer during the
Revolutionary War.
Just two weeks ago I was back in NJ and visited the Archives again.
This time I was able to check the microfilm containing the Revolutionary
War Indents myself and found TWELVE references to 2nd and 1st Lieutenant
Christopher FISHER serving in the Second and Third Regiments of the
Hunterdon County Militia. The references are mostly found in pension
applications etc. from soldier's who had served with Lieutenant
Christopher FISHER. So the moral is "keep looking" and don't get
discouraged if your first or second search is unsuccessful.
My mother was a WILSON and I have HORTMAN; CHAMBERLIN and FISHER
ancestry in her line (along with many other "Old" Hunterdon County
families).
Happy Hunting,
Bill Morrow in Houston, TX (native of NJ)
