Anyone out there researching the BUTLER family of Hunterdon Co., NJ? My
gggrandmother was CAROLINE BUTLER, born about 1838-39 to a JOHN BUTLER
and
his wife in NJ. She married JOHN PROBASCO and they raised their children

WILLIAM SANFORD PROBASCO and JULIA PROBASCO near Pittstown.

I have a possible BUTLER in my line but don't know how common a name
BUTLER is in Hunterdon.
What I have so far is:
My gggrandfather, Nathan D. SMITH, b.Bethlehem Twp, Feb 14, 1835 - d.
Frenchtown, Jan. 30, 1914.
Both his marriage and death certificates name his father as Joseph P.
SMITH and his mother's name is given only as Susan on the marriage record
(not answered on the death certificate) Joseph P. SMITH's dates are
March 21, 1804-Dec. 24, 1878.
There is, from Deats and the IGI (probably sourced to Deats too) an
appropriate marriage record for Joseph SMITH and Susan BUTLER in
Hunterdon on September 20, 1823. (Of course, more work will need to be
done to prove this connection.)
Then, more hypotheticals, there was an appropriately-aged man named
Nathan BUTLER in Hunterdon for whom there is a puzzling marriage record,
April 07, 1804. One record has his wife Charity Bellis, but another
marriage record for almost the same date has Charity Bellis marrying
Nathan Brittain. It's believed that the only way to solve this is to
examine the original record. I estimate Nathan Butler to have been born
around 1780.
This is as far as I've gotten with this so far.
