SERVICEMEN'S ADDRESSES WANTED BY COMMITTEE
If parents and relatives of servicemen and women in North Readington
Township want those serving their country to get a Christmas remembrance
they will have to see that addresses are in the hands of the Servicemen's
Gift Committee in the very near future. Addresses may be left or sent to
the C. Arnold Reger Agency, Whitehouse Station. Responses to the request
for addresses of those in the service has been very poor according to the
committee.
WHAT IS GOING ON AROUND WHITEHOUSE
Mrs. Louis Bella and Mrs. Peter Capaluko and children of Bound Brook
visited Sunday with Mrs. John Hendershot and family.
Mrs. Irving Cornett of Neshanic and Mrs. Paul Farley of North Branch were
recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Alpaugh Sr.
Mr. and Mrs. G. A. Burkhardt of Maplewood visited their nephew and niece,
Rev. and Mrs. Andrew A. Burkhardt on Sunday afternoon.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Winehatz of Manville visited the weekend with Mrs.
Winechtz' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Foerster, Kline boulevard.
The Misses Patricia and Shirley Hendershot have returned home from the
Somerville hospital where they had their tonsils removed Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. John Olsen of Staten Island visited the weekend with their
son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Voorhees, Jr.
Remeo Renard, Armed Guard Center Brooklyn NY of the U.S. Navy visited a
three day leave at the home of mr. and Mrs. A. Samuel, Whitehouse.
William P. Catlin (sp) Jr., U.S. Navy, returned to Bainbridge, Ga, on
Monday after spending a week at home during the serious illness of his
father in the Presbyterian Hospital, New York City.
Edward Brown and family moved on Friday from the Fijol house at the south
end of Whitehouse Station to the newly renovated property on main street
recently purchased from Jacob H. Young and vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Bishop and Mrs. Ruth Haines. Mr. and Mrs. George Van Why moved on Sunday
from the Mrs. Elizabeth Bacorn apartment to the house vacated by the Brown
family.
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore R. Apgar celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary on
Saturday.
THE QUAINT OLD TOWN OF OLDWICK
Mr. and Mrs. W. Warren Van Derbeck will celebrate the fortieth anniversary
of their wedding on Thursday, November 16. The couple has a son, Major
James Sayre Van Derbeck stationed in California and another son, Lieut. W.
Scott Van Derbeck, also in California at a Navel Base.
Pfc. Richard A. Gulick, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence A. Gulick, is expected
home for the holiday season in December. Pfc. Gulick has been overseas
more than a year and during the past few months has been receiving
treatment in the Naval Hospital. He entered the service with the Marine
Corps at the age of 17 and received his basic training at the U.S. Naval
Air Training Station in Jacksonville, Fla., and at the Cherry Point Marine
bases in North Carolina. His brother, Ensign David C. Gulick, is in the
Pacific war zone.
WILL BE INDUCTED TODAY
The following men from Local Draft Board No. 1, High Bridge, will be
inducted into the armed forces today (Tuesday):
Joseph Walter Szczech, Whitehouse Station; Foster Jefferson Castner, Glen
Cardner, R.D.; Fernando Frank Prakopcyk, Glen Gardner; Richard Francis
Burd, Pennington; Albert Joseph Kiceina, Hampton; Robert Haines Wilson,

OBSERVE ANNIVERSARY
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pickel, Lebanon, observed the 37th anniversary of their
wedding Sunday at the home of their brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Elmer Pickel, on the Goebel Farms, near Allerton. The couple has three
children, Mrs. Earl B. Farley of Farley Farm, Lebanon; Mrs. Howard Conover
of Cokesbury, and Jacob W. Pickel of Highleigh Farm.
HONORED AT STORK SHOWER
A luncheon and a surprise stork shower in honor of Mrs. Frank M. Hildebrant
of Oldwick were held Saturday afternoon in the home of Mrs. Wilson S. Eick
of Whitehouse Station. Hostesses were Mrs. Oscar Vroom of Plainfield and
Mrs. Wilson S. Eick. Guests included Mrs. Edward Goehring of Somerville;
Mrs. Charles Conner, Miss Bertha Reed, Mrs. John Y. Eick, Mrs. J. Robert
Vroom, Mrs. Charles A. Hildebrant, Miss Margaret Hildebrant and Miss
Majorie Hildebrant of Oldwick.
SURPRISED ON BIRTHDAY
A surprise party in honor of the birthday of Cecil Beavers was shared by
guests Saturday night in the Beavers home on main street, Oldwick,
Following the presentation of gifts, games and stunts were enjoyed. A
scene was enacted by Mrs. Leroy Lane. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Lester
Rockefellow of Flemington; Mr. and Mrs. Roland Inscho Mr. and Mrs. Leroy
Lane, Mrs. Daniel A. Coughlin, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Hildebrant, Mr. and
Mrs. J. Robert Vroom, Mr. and Mrs. John V. Melick, Miss Shirley Ann
Beavers, Douglas Beavers, of Oldwick; Mr. and Mrs. Sven Danielson of
Bissell and Mrs. Mable Beavers of Pottersville.
BUSY BOROUGH OF LEBANON NEWS ITEMS
Mrs. James H. Ramsey was a visitor in New York City on Monday.
The Youth's Choir will meet and practice Wednesday evening at the home of
Miss Beverly Barras.
Nathan McCatharn underwent a major operation on Monday morning at
Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield.
Mrs. Mabel Kelsey of Lynbrook L.I. is visiting her son-in-law and daughter,
Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Philhower.
Mr. and Mrs. Delbert Simon were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
David McCatharn, Lebanon, R.D.
Mrs. E. W. Sutton and Mrs. Joseph Ramsey were weekend guest of Dr. and Mrs.
Robert Flyan in New York City.
Mr. and Mrs. Garrett C. Sharp have sold their farm at Potterstown and have
purchased the home of Mrs. Henry Bragg, Main Street.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Jacobs and daughter Mary Donna of Metuchen and Mr. and
Mrs. John Gray of Perth Amboy were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Leroy MacPherson.
Pfc. William E. McDowell has returned to Fort George G. Meade, Md., after a
visit with his wife the former Miss Doris Sutton and his mother, Mrs. Addie
McDowell, near Potterstown.
Mrs. Rachael A. Schurtz of Long Valley, who is nearing her 93rd birthday,
came Saturday to spend the winter at the Apgar Nursing Home. Miss Sarah L.
Voorhees of Brunswick Avenue, is also being cared for at the same home.
A son Robert Arthur, was born November 9th to Mr. and Mrs. Paul P. Frome of
Long Valley. The couple has another son, Paul. Mrs. Frome is the former
Miss Elizabeth Merrill of the borough.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Pickel are discontinuing farming at their home, Hileigh
Farm. They have operated the farm for the past 14 years. J. Kugelman of
Hampton has rented the farm and is now moving equipment there to operate
it. Mr. Kugelman will move there in the spring when Mr. and Mrs. Pickel
vacate.
TWO HUNTERS FINED $20
Jack Anastasia of Union City and Curato Romola of Hackensack, were arrested
by Deputy Game Warden Lloyd Bowers on Nov. 10th for each having shot and
having in his possession a rabbit at 8:30 a.m. The season opened at 9:00
am Friday. They were arraigned before Readington Township Recorder Howard
Drinkwater, by Game Warden Kraeuter of North Branch. The hunters each paid
a fine of $20 and cost.
MARRIED 18 YEARS
Mr. and Mrs. Arthur E. Force Jr. of 30 Division Street, Somerville,
celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary on Friday. The couple spent the
day in Asbury Park where Mr. Force was employed for five years in the
Steinbeck Kresge store, having charge of the interior decorating, before
moving to Somerville.
TRUCK CRASHES INTO CAR NEAR NORTH BRANCH
While on their way to Somerville Thursday, Mr. and Mrs. Russell I. Yawger
and Mrs. John H. Yawger narrowly escaped serious injury in a motor accident
on the new dual highway just east of Fiddler's Elbow near North
Branch. Mr. Yawger was traveling on the outside lane with no vehicle in
sight, when suddenly there was a terrific crash in the rear of the Yawger
sedan. Mr. Yawger was traveling about 35 miles an hour and going down
grade or the impact of the collision would have been much more
serious. Investigation showed that a heavy loaded truck, driven by Anthony
DiProperzio of New York and owned by Silver Lines, Inc., also of New York,
had crashed into the rear of the Yawger car, badly damaging it to the
extent of about $300. Investigation was made by State Troopers, who gave
DiProperzio a summons to appear before Recorder Dean in North Branch on a
charge of reckless driving.
