As an update on my concern about opening attachments with rootsweb addresses:

I subscribed to , in the digest form. First time I've subscribed to Digest form.

I heard from many list managers that rootsweb 'never' sends attachments. That they are stripped before going out, whatever that means.

I did not know that the Digest form comes through as an attachment from the list, and so deleted the first three or four I received.
But then ran a virus scan, gritted my teeth, and opened the attachment (actually two). They are census lookups. But I ran virus scan immediately after opening, just in case. All clear.

I do think that the distinction needs to be established between Digest form attachments, and other kinds of attachments from outside sources.
