My parents encountered a town in the mountains of Tennessee or Kentucky in
1933 where they were still speaking Elizabethan English. My Welsh-born
father could understand them but my American-born mother could not. However,
later, my parents encountered a town somewhere in Eastern Pennsylvania, same
time period, where no one in that town spoke English. My mother said they
spoke Dutch but I think it was German because I don't believe she understood
what Pennsylvania Dutch meant. The people in both towns had been in the USA
for 300 years!
