Jan -
My direct, Johan David EFLAND (also spelled EVELAND and EPHLAND) held
the title of "freeholder" also...and...in Amwell Township...during the year
1741.
The Hunterdon County Historical Society (Flemington) tells me that a
freeholder
is a county official. In my ancestor's case, he directed the design and
building
of roads in Hunterdon County. David lived on a 150 acre farm that is covered
by the town of Flemington today....his farm was sold by his children in 1762.
Amwell was the closest township of that day.
