Subject: [NJHUNTER] NJ HUNTERDON MILITIA LOOKUPS
Date: Thu, 8 Nov 2001 09:38:50 EST

Hi All,

I received several requests for look-ups in my abbreviated version of the
Militia records, and figured I'd post the items to the List, just in case
anyone else is looking for these names.

Several of the men were "exempts", so I'm adding this quote:

"Exemption from military duty was either by reason of physical disability or
because of certain specified occupations or official positions, although
under literal reading of the law others could apparently obtain exemption by
the payment of a special tax of $3.00 a year."

To Linda and Brenda, I'm sorry but I could find no BROOKS, BARNELL, KNOWLES,
or MYERS (MIERS) on the lists that I have...doesn't mean they're not there,
just not on the pages I have.

Maureen- Henry and John BUNN, both served on the Alexandria Twp. Militia,
p.10

Yulonda in IL- Elijah RITTENHOUSE, Kingwood Militia, 3rd Co., Ensign, elected
15 March 1793, p.9; William RITTENHOUSE, Amwell Militia, 7th Co.,
Lieutanant, elected 28 March 1793, p.8; Hill RUNYON, Amwell Twp. Exempts,
p.19; John RIGHTENHOUSE, Amwell Twp. Exempts, p.19

Don - Joseph READING, Jr., Amwell Militia, 7th Co., Ensign, elected 28 March
1793, p.8; John FOX (p. 18)and John READING (p.19) both Amwell Twp. Exempts.
And as an added bonus, Don, the list was signed on 22 May 1793 in Trenton, by
Thomas READING, Commisioner for the County of Hunterdon. There is a footnote
on p.9 that reads:

"Thomas Reading, the Commissioner who personally wrote this record, was born
in Amwell Township Sept. 27, 1734, and died Dec. 15, 1814. He served as
Captain during the Revolution. Reading Township was set off from Amwell by
Royal Patent dated July 15, 1730, and named in honor of John Reading, father
of Thomas, a large Land owner and prominent citizen, twice acting as
Governor, who later resided at what is now Flemington Junction. The present
name of the township, Readington, is an abbreviation of Reading Town or
Township."

All above info is taken from: " The Hunterdon County New Jersey Militia
1792", compiled by Hiriam E. Deats, Sec. of the Hunterdon County Historical
Society; pub.1936 in Flemington, NJ. Call # 974.971, located at the
Hunterdon Co. Library in the Jerseyana Collection.

Hope these are your people,
Wendy
