Mike, thanks for your posting to NJHUNTER regarding the New Jersey
Pettits. I would be most interested in learning more about your
sources for information about the family of Thomas Pettit & Christian
Mellowes.
I am especially interested in this line of PETTITs, as I descend from
their son Nathaniel (1646-1718, #7 on your list, who died in
Hopewell, NJ), and Nathaniel's daughter Jane (#15 on your list) who
married George Ely (ca. 1682 - 1750).
According to the published Ely genealogy, and to both New Jersey
marriage and will records, I believe that this George Ely remained in
New Jersey for most or all of his life. It was his son, George Ely
(ca. 1706-1793), who was of Bucks County, PA. More specifics on this
if you are interested.
I am also intrigued by your entries for Jane's brothers Nathaniel
(#13) and Jonathan (#16), as I have several other connections in that
time period to both HEATHs and BELLs which I would like to pursue.
One of the more interesting connections in terms of your message is
that the grandfather of George Ely who married Jane Pettit was
another George Ely who married Sarah Heath in England. I am still
trying to determine if (and probably how) this Sarah Heath is related
to the other direct line HEATH ancestry which my husband and I share
in Bucks County.
One of the sons of George Ely and Jane Pettit, Joshua Ely (1704-1783)
married Elizabeth Bell, daughter of Henry & Elizabeth Bell. I am
also looking for further information on this BELL family
(Chesterfield Friends Meeting, Hopewell Township, then Burlington
County, NJ). Henry Bell's widow, Elizabeth (widowed ca. 1713),
married "a Pettit" that I am still trying to identify.
Feel free to contact me directly if you would like to pursue any of
this further.
Ruth
