You can see Mechanicsville on the 1873 Atlas of Hunterdon County. The old
section of Whitehouse, not Whitehouse Station, but the north-east part of
Readington Township was called Mechanicsville. You can also see it in the
1850 federal census of Hunterdon County for Readington Twp, the part that
has the post office "Mechanicsville". What is now the Whitehouse United
Methodist Church was formerly called the Mechanicsville Methodist Church,
and the cemetery where the old church building used to stand is still there
across the street from the Ryland Inn. Every day on my way to and from work,
I travel on US Route 22 through Mechanicsville, now called Whitehouse.
Phyllis D'Autrechy compiled a wonderful pamphlet called "Hunterdon
County Place Names" which is still sold by the Hunterdon Co Cultural &
Heritage Commission. On page 37 is the following:
"MECHANICSVILLE: Readington Township. In 1844, Barbour and Howe described
this settlement as one mile east of White House village and containing a
tavern, store, a number of mechanics' shops and fifteen dwellings. By 1881
Snell commented that White House Village and Mechanicsville had nearly "run
together". Schmidt, in 1959, wrote that Mechanicsville and that part of
Whitehouse north of Route 22 were known as East Whitehouse. (Snell: 495; BH
255; Schmidt:31; Beers:48)"
The last reference, Beers, is the 1873 Hunterdon Atlas.
