More Men Inducted Into Armed Forces - The following men from Hunterdon
County Draft Board No. 1, High Bridge, were inducted into the armed forces
on February 23: William Stanley Reut, Whitehouse Station; Howard James
Hoffman, Lebanon R.D. 2; Adam Felix Kantorski Lebanon R.D. 1; Donald John
McKnought, Lebanon R.D. 2: Clarence Edward Dow, Readington; Earl LeRoy
Brunt Jr., William Paul Tinnes, Thomas George Rozgorski, Alfred Eugene
Gyuro, Pittstown R.D. 1: John Hendershot, Califon and John Benjamin Winger
Jr., Phillipsburg.

Mrs. Frances Hall , 85, Dies - Mrs. Frances Hall, 85 years old, died Monday
morning, February 26, in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alice Lidgate in
Point Pleasant. Mrs. Hall is the widow of the late Peter Hall of
Oldwick. Born in Stanton on March 16, 1859, Mrs. Hall, the former Miss
Frances Potts, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph and Katherine Potts
of Stanton, would have been 86 years old this year. Mrs. Hall was a member
of the Zion Lutheran Church of Oldwick. She is survived by one daughter,
Mrs. Alice Lidgate of Point Pleasant; a granddaughter, and a brother, Lewis
Potts of Stanton. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the
Coughlin Funeral Home, Oldwick, Rev. F. K. Wagschal, pastor of the Oldwick
Lutheran Church will officiate. Interment will be in New Germantown
Cemetery, Oldwick.

Pvt. Wm. McDowell Now Serving In Belgium - Pvt. William E. McDowell, son of
Mrs. Clara McDowell of Mountain Road, Whitehouse Station, and the late
Capt. Addie McDowell, is now serving in the combat area in Belgium. He was
transferred there recently from Germany, and prior to that served in
France. Private McDowell, who is with the 47th Armored Infantry, entered
service in May, 1944. He trained at Camp Croft, South Carolina and was
stationed at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland, before overseas last
November. Before entering service, private McDowell was employed by Dugan
Brothers of Plainfield. His wife the former Miss Doris Sutton, and son
Donald, reside with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Howard Sutton of Lebanon Rural
Route 2.

William Stout Expires - William M. Stout, 75, died Saturday in the
Somerville hospital, where he was taken on Friday. He had been ill for
some time with a complication of diseases. He was a son of the late John
K. and Emily Hoffman Stout. And was born in Newark, but had resided in
Orange for some time. Last fall he and Mrs. Stout moved to Lebanon where
they resided with his sister-in-law, Mrs. William Ramsey. He was a retired
machinist. He is survived by his wife, Alice Beavers Stout. Funeral
services will be held Wednesday at the home of Mrs. William Ramsey. Rev.
H. Bufkin Oliver, pastor of the Lebanon Methodist Church will
officiate. Interment will be made in the Lebanon Methodist Cemetery by
funeral director John G. Brokaw.

Lieut. Hall Home After Completing 35 Missions - First Lieut. Robert S.
Hall, a Flying Fortress pilot, who has completed 35 missions over enemy
occupied European territory, is home on a 22 day furlough with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Norwood S. Hall of Brunswick Avenue, Lebanon. Lieut. Hall,
who has 240 combat hours to his credit, was awarded the Air Medal with five
Oak Leaf Clusters for "meritorious achievement." He also received the
Combat Stars for the battles of France and Germany. Lieutenant Hall has
flown his fort in numerous attacks on enemy front line positions in support
of Allied ground forces. During the recent prolonged air offensive
against the Nazis' oil resources he took part in assault on oil refineries
at Dresden, Liepzig and Merseburg. His crew's bombs have fallen on
airfields in Germany and German held European and on the Nazi army's supply
lines on attacks on railroad yards at Cologne, Coblenz and
Neumunster. Lieut. Hall won his wings at Marfa, Tex., in February,
1944. Before entering the AAF in October, 1942, he was employed by the
Mack Manufacturing Corporation at Plainfield. At the conclusion of his
furlough on March 9, he will report at Atlantic City for further assignment.

D.A.R. Meets Here - The quarterly meeting of Old Whitehouse Chapter D.A.R.
was held Saturday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Wilmie B. Carter with Mrs.
Carter and Mrs. Alvah Ramsey as hostesses. The regent, Mrs. Ida M.
Bonnell, presided and introduced the guest speaker, Miss Alice G.
Throckmorton, state chairman, of Ellis Island. Miss Throckmorton talked on
Occupational Therapy. Twenty-two members attended the meeting. The next
meeting of the Chapter is scheduled for Saturday, May 26, at the home
of Miss Gladys Pidcock, Somerville. Mrs. Harriet G. Pidcock, Mrs John V.
Schomp and Miss Gladys Pidcock will be hotesses.




The Quaint Old Town of Oldwick

Mrs. Furman Kugler and children and Miss Evelyn Neff of Bound Brook were
Sunday guests of their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Neff.
Miss Florence Jarmson recently celebrated the 12th anniversary of her
birthday in the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Jarmson.
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis P. Salter of Fairmount recently entertained Mr. and Mrs.
David Poole of Hackettstown, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Lance of Bedminster.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Russell Conover entertained as week-end guests J. Allyn
Conover, seaman first class, of Lakehurst and Miss Jean Pelteir of Lakewood.
Mrs. Irene McCathern who has been visiting Mr. and Mrs. Harry Smith in
Saddle River and with friends in New York will return to her home this week.
Miss Marjorie Hoffman who recently underwent an appendectomy in the
Somerville hospital is recuperating in the home of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Howard Hoffman.
Miss Betty Lindabury of the Oldwick Mountainville road has concluded a stay
with her brother-in-law and sister Captain and Mrs. Robert C. Congdon, of
Washington D.C.
LeRoy H. Lance has been named Red Cross chairman for Tewksbury
Township. Assisting by districts are Mrs. George B. Melick, east district,
and Mrs. Donald Silvius, west district.
Pvt. Vernon Conover, who has been hospitalized in England, visited on
Sunday with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Russell Conover. Pvt. Conover is
now stationed at Staten Island Army Base Hospital.
Mr. and Mrs Leroy Lane, Mr. and Mrs. Van F. Hoffman, Howard Ehmann and
Leroy Fleming Jr., attended the Sportsman's Show in Madison Square Garden,
New York, on Saturday.
Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo D. Cregar and daughters Lois and Betty were among
guests at a celebration in honor of the 95th birthday of Mr. Cregar's
grandmother, Mrs. Mary Jane Sutton who is the oldest citizen of Califon.
Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Lane were Sunday dinner guests of Mr. and Mrs Daniel
Fleming in Fairmount. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Albert Hayward of
Gladstone and Mr. and Mrs. Isadore Fleming and daughter Cynthia Jane of
Fairmount.
Mrs. Jennie Pickell of Whitehouse is spending several weeks at the home of
Mrs. Theodore R. Apgar, Main Street.
Mrs. Herman Smith of Hackensack visited the weekend with their son Jack
Long and Mr. and Mrs. Clark E. Everett.
Mr. and Mrs. John Stiger were Sunday dinner guests of Mrs. Stiger's parents
Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Laubach, Somerville.
The birthday of Jack Long was celebrated Friday at the family party in the
home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mr.s Clark Everett of Main Street
Donald Peterson is recovering from a broken leg suffered when he fell on
the ice recently at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Peterson,
in Pleasant Run.
Pvt. George N. Boudreau of the Engineer Corps, Fort Belvoir, Virginia last
week spent a three day furlough with his mother, Mrs. George N. Boudreau at
the Lebanon Hotel.
Lieut. Robert S. Hall home on furlough from overseas, addressed Boy Scot
Troop 62 Wednesday night in the firehouse. Lieut. Hall is a former member
of the Lebanon troop.
Edwin C. Van Dyke who has been under observation and treatment for the past
three weeks in St. Barnabas hospital, Newark, returned to his home at
Cokesbury on Wednesday.
Howard Hoffman of Pinelawn View Farm visited last week with his sister,
Mrs. George W. Ord, and other relatives in Plainfield. Mr. Hoffman was
honored at a family dinner in observance of his birthday.
William W. Striker, training under the Navy V program in civil engineering
at Dartmouth College Hanover, N.H. is home on a 10 day leave with his
parents the Rev. and Mrs. William Striker at the Reformed Church parsonage.
A daughter born recently to Mr. and Mrs. William Maltese in Somerville
hospital has been named Patricia Ann Maltese. The couple has two other
daughters, Phyllis and Marilyn Maltese. Mr. Maltese is a son of Mr. and
Mrs. Carlo Maltese of Myrtle avenue.
Mr. and Mrs. Theodore R. Apgar have received word that their son, Theodore
Pickell of the U.S. Army, somewhere in Germany, has recently been advanced
from private first class to corporal. Corp. Pickell has been action with
the forces over there since D-day.
Pvt. Louis L. Klose is ill of pneumonia in a base hospital at Fort Benning
Ga., Private Klose recently completed a five week basic training at the
Fort Benning, Paratroop School and was home for an 18 day furlough with
Mr. and Mrs. George P. Young at Hillside Farms, with whom he resided before
induction into the Army last July.
Lt. Jane Pickell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore R. Apgar who is with
the U. S. Army Nurse Corps, has been sent to Camp Lee, Va., and expects to
go overseas soon. Lt. Pickell has been stationed at Fort George Meade,
Md., since October. Before entering the service she trained at
Philadelphia General Hospital and did private duty there for a few months.

Whitehouse Review Tuesday, April 24, 1945

Mrs. John C. Hoffman has returned to her home in Cokesbury after a visit
with her son-in-law and daughter, Postmaster and Mrs. Walter W. Lance.
Mr. and Mrs. James Ewing of Stanton entertained at dinner Thursday evening
Mrs. John McCloughan and son Seaman Third Class William Schenck.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Orts and family of Flemington were Sunday guests of
Mr. Orts brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. William Edinger, Main Street.
John H. Sylvester of Whitehouse is in the Bound Brook Hospital with a
broken leg. Mr. Sylvester sustained the injury Friday while at work at
Belle Meade.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Henry Staub of "Book Lane," Whitehouse R.D., entertained
their son-in-law, William G. Birmingham of Washington, D.C. over the week-end.
Mrs. John H. Yawger has returned to her home on Main Street after visiting
two weeks with her son and daughter-in-law Mr. and Mrs. Rusell Yawger and
family in Paterson.
