Devlin's painting is called "Lambertville Vernacular" and a description of
the architecture can be found in his book "Portraits of American
Architecture" on pp. 149-50. Also in this book is another Hunterdon
building, a plate of The Clinton Mill. Harry Devlin died just a few months
ago. About 1985 or 1986, prior to the publication of this last book, he came
into the Westfield library which he used frequently, and asked me (the
reference librarian) to locate the price of a box of nails ca. 1880-95.
Unsuccessful, I passed the request up the ladder, so to speak, to our area
library, which failed also. We all let him down and the book went to galley
without the exact price of a box of nails. He, his wife, and large family,
lived in a Victorian house on the Mountainside-Westfield border, with his
studio in the carriage house on the property. And how many times have we
read our children, "Old Black Witch" or "To Grandfather's House We Go"
written and illustrated by Wende and Harry Devlin? He spent many hours/days
recording the architecture in Hunterdon County. Thanks to Beverly for
bringing back pleasant memories of this grand man.
