Subject: [NJHUNTER] Looking for the Parentage of Abraham LAKE of Hunterdon Co, NJ
Date: Wed, 20 Feb 2002 12:45:40 -0500 (EST)
Greetings everyone,
I need a little help. In fact, I can use all the help I can get.
To bring everyone up to speed on my LAKE search I'm trying to prove the
parents of my gg grandfather, Abraham LAKE. Abraham was born in Hunterdon
Co, NJ in 1796, married Susan GARRISON in about 1818 there, and removed to
Warren Co, NJ in about 1825. Later they removed to Susquehanna Co, Pa in
about 1859 where they died.
The only clues of any kind that I have collected concerning the parentage
of Abraham is a bio in a Pa book done on a son of Abraham, John LAKE. In
the bio John states that his grandfather's name was John and that he had
been a sheriff in Hunterdon County. There was a separate bio in another
Pa book on a grandson of Abraham which said that Abraham's grandfather was
Garrison (I'm thinking Garret ?).
Last week I traveled to Hunterdon Co to do some research. I found one
document dated 1829. The document was a court case. The document
referred to a judgement in 1818. The text of the document states that the
defendant produced a "receipt of John Lake late, deputy sheriff of the
county of Hunterdon". The receipt was from the judgement in 1818. I'm
assuming that the "late" means that John LAKE is deceased, and not that
he's the ex-deputy sheriff? I wouldn't think that they would use the word
"late" to mean "ex", would you?
Also, in other documents dated as early as 1811 and as late as 1822 I've
seen a John LAKE referred to as a constable.
So, assuming that John LAKE died between 1818 (when John did the receipt
as noted in the previously mentioned document ... and it could be 1822 if
the John who was constable was the same John who was a deputy sheriff) and
1829 I can find no record ... no will, no inventory, no divisions of land,
no nothing. Why would there be none of these things? There's a John LAKE
in Hunterdon County who died in 1808, another in 1809, and another in 1855
but nothing in between. Does anyone know where I could look to find some
other document indicating the death of my John LAKE ?
Also, (remember from the bio mentioned above that Garrison or Garret (?)
LAKE could have been the father of John LAKE) I found other court cases.
It appears that a John and Sarah LAKE went to court against Garret LAKE
(who is deceased) in 1790. There is a Garret LAKE who's will is dated
1787. I have only seen an abstract of this will but I did read somewhere
(I don't have it handy right now) that Garret LAKE mentions an unnamed son
"not of age" in his will. Maybe this unnamed son is John and he came of
age in 1790 to fight something in Garret's will? Does anyone have a copy
of this will by any chance?
Also, I found a court case dated 1798 showing John LAKE Sr & James LAKE
against John LAKE Jr.
This would all fit in nice and cleanly with the small leads that I already
have. Plus the timing is very right.
I sure would appreciate hearing anyone's thoughts on any or all of this.
