These days I use genealogy.com exclusively for their coverage of the
1900 census. It is a gold mine for that; you get to look at the actual
pages and struggle with the handwriting yourself... I agree that their
library is of mixed use and I gave up long ago trying to get anything
out of it; even in books I actually own (like Savage) I found the
references given online were very hard to track down. But the 1900
census! It's wonderful. It's the one that gives the date of
immigration, if you're lucky enough to have an ancestor who arrived in
America in the 19th century. And the month and year of birth, plus how
many years married, and how many living children there are.
