This petition was quoted in the book, "Pioneers of Old Hopewell", on p.
111, by Ralph EGE, originally printed in 1908, as you have it in your
letter. The author follows with: "It is not known whether the petition was
acted upon at that time or laid over, but it is a matter of record that only
seven years had elapsed before the road was again brought to the attention
of the authorities, and this time in a manner that doubtless secured the
necessary improvement. The following is a copy:
"May 15, 1752, Hunterdon County, S. S. We, the Grand Jury, now
sitting in, and for the County of Hunterdon, Oyer & Terminer, do present the
overseers of the road of the Township of Hopewell for not repairing a
certain road called "Roger's Road," leading from a Stone School House by
Daniel Hart's mill to the Province Line, being the road leading to
Brunswick."
"Samuel Stout, Foreman"

(The name Roger in "Roger's Road" refers to Dr. Roger PARKE who was one of
the original settlers in Hopewell.)

The author then inserts a copy of the original survey of the road from
Ringoes to Marshall's Corner, the closing paragraph of which calls the
Trenton and Hopewell road "Roger Park's Road." This was signed by the
commissioners for the county of Hunterdon on the 28th day of Mar 1722 by
Philip Ringo, Charles Clark, John Burroughs, George Green, John Holcombe,
and Thomas Burroughs.
