The Marx Room is the local history room of the Easton Area Public Library,
across the river from Phillipsburg. The shelves contain mostly eastern PA
books and collections, especially strong on Northampton County, PA, Bucks
County, etc. but with some Warren and Hunterdon Co information. For example,
the city directories of Easton also contain the city of Phillipsburg for the
same year and they are on microfilm. There are microfilms for the federal
censuses of the eastern most counties of PA including Luzerne, Bucks
Northampton, Montgomery, and also some for Warren and Hunterdon counties of
NJ. The Marx room also has all the cemetery inscriptions for Northampton
county, death and marriage records from the late 19th century and early 20th
(up to 1917 or thereabouts). But what I use the most are the indexes to
obituaries in the Easton Express Times. As the indexer keeps up with the
current year, she is also indexing retrospectively. The latest one is for
2000 but the 2001 will be coming shortly. They go back to 1948 with 1947
coming with 2001 (I hope). The obituaries cover not only Easton areas but
also most of Hunterdon and Warren, some Sussex county. It is open daily
except lunch hour which is 12 -1, and also on Saturday all day, except
12-1pm. The microfilm is right outside the room and can be used at any time
the library is open.
