After the recent thread about where to get copies of the NJ state censuses, I made inquiries at the state archives. Mr. Karl J. Niederer, director of the Division of Archives and Records Management, has been extraordinarily dedicated to getting me answers to my questions. He forwarded my query to Bette Epstein (equally helpful) at the archives and I received this reply from her today:

"First let me mention that the New Jersey State Archives has duplicate copies of the New Jersey State Census - Hunterdon County for 1885, 1895, and 1905. You can interlibrary loan these census records through your local public library, instead of purchasing copies. We will interlibrary loan the microfilms for one month. Have your local public library send the interlibrary loan request to:

The 1875 Hunterdon County Census has a complete name index that was compiled by the Phyllis D'Autrechy in 1992. It is a computer printout, and not a published book. It is available at the New Jersey State Archives, or at the Hunterdon County Historical Society in Flemington.

Just a warning regarding the 1865 Hunterdon County census. First, there is no index. Second, some townships only name the head of household, and give the number of members in the household. Some townships name each member of the family.

I'm sorry to say that we do not have duplicate copies of the 1865 or 1875 Hunterdon County census that could be interlibrary loaned."

Lynne
