Subject: [NJHUNTER] In 1870-72 NJ, what was legal age to marry?
Date: Sun, 28 Apr 2002 22:22:12 -0400
Listers,
Can someone tell me the age at which a girl could marry without parental
consent in NJ? I have a 2nd g-grandmother who supposedly lived all her life
in NJ, married a man from NJ, but NJ has no record of any marriage (but a
record of a daughter's birth in 1871). Per a census, the mother was only 16
when she had my g-grandmother, so would have been 15 when married. I have
an unreadable handwritten certificate-the sort the minister or JP would give
the couple. The date has been tampered with and the officiant's name
destroyed.
Suggestions on where I can look next? I've been to Trenton and looked
personally through all the marriage records for the probable years.
Thank you.
