Subject: [NJHUNTER] Access to NJ Vital Records

Fellow Researchers,

Since my original posting, I have done some research on the topic of
public records. I found that the Freedom of Information Act (FOI) is
a Federal Law, not applicable at the State level. As I understand it,
New Jersey is an "open records" State. Vital records of birth,
marriage and death are considered public record. Individuals have a
legal right to this information under the New Jersey Right To Know
Law - Title 47. The only thing confidential about the vital records
is the cause of death on a death record after 1940.

A few local registrars will try to convince you of the contrary. Just
make sure that when you write to request your vital records that you
indicate "in pursuant of the New Jersey Right To Know Law - Title 47".
