I would think the reason the cause of death is confidential would be:
Suicide, Syphillis, AIDS or other reasons that there may be shame
connected to the death.
I have received death certificates from Trenton where the cause of death
is not totally covered and I've been able to read that the decedant
walked in front of a Jersey Central train, for instance. This fact was
not in the paper at the time so it might have been considered somewhat
hush-hush by the survivors.
However, when I obtained a death certificate for my mother's 1962 death,
I got it from the County Clerk (in Warren Co) and that had the cause of
death readable...don't know whether it was because I was a next-of-kin or
whether it was because I was requesting it at the local level.
