Hi Gloria,
You Wrote:
Have been reading your e-mails from others about the Hunterdon Gazette.
I was wondering if you came across,
"Peter Melick sold Real Estate of Lemuel Miller
advertised, 2-18 1855, was in for 3 ISSUES." Luke SWICK bought land
Hunterdon Gazette, 2-18-1855
Also would you know anything about the Clinton Democrat ?
Published in the Clinton Democrat and other weekly paper.
There was an ad, "SALE OF LAND" advertised 10-5-1874.
sold 10-21-1874 to William Banghart
Appreciate any help you can give. Gloria in Arizona
Answer:
I am still in the early stages of the Gazette having completed from 1825 to 1836. Progress is slow since I am capturing all the articles of interest to Hunterdon County. The computerized print out of these articles is now over 700 pages. The Index contains over 7,000 individual names. It takes something like 3 months to do a year and I have been at it for over 2 years now!
So, I have not gotten to 1855 yet, and probably won't be there for a few years.
But here is what I will do for you since you are so far away. I'll check the Gazette for the above advertisement on Thursday, July 11 and get a digital photo of it and send to you. I can't guarantee this since I know the papers from the 1850s are in very poor condition and I may not be allowed to view them. However, all are on microfilm, so I'll check that out. If so, then no digital photo since you know the generally poor quality of microfilms.
The Clinton Democrat (if that is the name of the paper) is probably on microfilm. Not sure if the Hunterdon County Historical Society has an original. If not, I'll look this up on the microfilm and let you know.
Regards for now, I'll get back to you on Thursday.
Bill
