I believe that the archives in Trenton have everything up to 1948 and
prior to that the documents would still be at the locality originating them.
I could be wrong but for some reason that date sticks in my head.

At any rate call the archives or go online to get an idea of the holdings.

Hi Elayne,

best place to do research for Trenton for 1800-1835? I would be looking for
wills and probate records, deeds, marriage, death, and birth records.

RESPONSE:

Trenton was part of Hunterdon County until early 1838 when Mercer county was
formed from parts of Hunterdon: Townships of Trenton, Lawrence, Hopewell and
Ewing and parts of some of the other counties surrounding it.

The Hunterdon County Historical Society (HCHS), the Hunterdon County Clerk's
and the Surrogate's Office would or should contain records for Trenton up to
1838. All are closed on weekends. Trenton, the capital of New Jersey, did
not become the official repository for state records until after the dates
you asked about. There may be local historical societies in the Trenton
area, but I have done no research there and am not familiar with those
facilities.

The newspaper for Hunterdon at that time was the Hunterdon Gazette first
published March 27, 1825. It contained the political as well as local news
for Trenton, etc. I am indexing the Hunterdon Gazette and have completed the
years 1825 thru 1836. Let me know what surname(s) you are researching and I
will let you know whether the names appear in the index. The newspaper is
available at the HCHS Library.

Regards, Bill
