Elaine,

The NJ State Archives would be the best place to start your research. They
have a vast collection of materials, much of it dating back to colonial
times. Birth, marriage, and death records did not officially begin until
1848, however, the Archives has a section in the research room with cabinets,
sorted by county, that hold misc.county info. Some cabinets are sparse, some
are loaded. I have found great stuff in these cabinets. There is also a huge
newspaper collection.

They are located at 225 West State St. Trenton. Open Mon- Fri, 8:30am --
4:30pm.
I would call ahead to discuss with them exactly what they have for your time
period. (609) 292-6260 The staff is incredible. They are friendly,
courteous, professional in every way, and can not be beat for their knowledge
and helpfulness.

Two doors down is the NJ State Library. They have their entire 4th floor
dedicated to NJ and family history.

They are usually open on Saturdays, but not during the month of Aug.

Another great place is the Joint Free Library of Morristown and Morris
County.

They specialize in Morris County, of course, but they do have alot of early
materials. They have the advantage of being open on weekends.

Then there is the Special Collections and University Archives at the
Archibald Stevens Alexander Library (Rutgers)

Hope this helps,
Helen
