Hi Mary & Arline and others:

Recording of marriages prior to 1848 in New Jersey was not mandated by law.
The minister or Justice of the Peace voluntarily recorded marriages up to
that time. The assumption is not that the marriage was in another county,
but that if the marriage did take place, anywhere, it was not recorded in
the marriage book held by the county clerk.

All Hiram E. Deats did for the book referenced below, was to go through the
marriage book which is at the Hunterdon County Clerk's Office on Main St.,
Flemington and type out all the hand written entries!
